Joseph Aoun, the highly successful Dean of the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences at the University of Southern Califonia, will soon become the first professor of linguistics head a university in the USA.He has just been named the next president of NortheasternUniversity here in Boston. Congratulations to both him and Northeastern. Aoun earned his PhD in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at MIT. Previously the highest-ranked linguists in university administrations (people like Victoria Fromkin at UCLA, Samuel Jay Keyser at MIT, Jorge Hankamer at UCSC, Susan Steele at Mills College, etc.) were in ranks such as vice chancellor, provost, and dean.
